Lopez Sr. Doubles Down On the “Crazy Money” Needed to Make Haney vs Lopez

Over two divisions and several years, one of the best matches in the sport to be made is Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (19-1, 13 KO’s) and undisputed lightweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (30-0, 15 KO’s). Despite the appeal for this duel, it has never come to fruition. On the outside looking in, it appears that Team Haney is a bit more serious. In fact, in a somewhat surprising move, Teofimo Lopez Sr, father and chief second to Teofimo Lopez, stated they would need $20 million dollars to face Haney.

This is clearly an outrageous amount of money to be demanding for a lightweight duel, but nothing new. Nevertheless, during a recent interview with Mill City Boxing, Lopez Sr. didn’t back up an inch from his stance.

“Listen, the thing is you got Floyd Mayweather doing exhibition shows making like crazy money. Why not pay the real fighters, the guys that are on top of the world right now? Devin still got a lot to prove for himself.”

PAR FOR THE COURSE!

For many, this statement is loaded with inconsistencies. To begin, Lopez Sr. opted to use an example of someone, in Floyd Mayweather, who is not even putting on real boxing matches! Going a step further, Teofimo Lopez Sr. insists that Haney has not truly proved himself as a top predator in the sport. If this is the case, and The Dream is fool’s gold, then why the demand for such a monumental payday in the first place? Logically this does not seem to add up.

Yet, what else is new out of Team Lopez? Right now, technically speaking, The Takeover is still claiming to be retired. If this is the cas,e then there is no point in even speculating why, or if, a Lopez vs Haney showdown will ever take place. If Lopez is not retired however, let’s hope that all this grandstanding is placed to the side and we get the juicy fight we’ve been waiting for! In the meantime however, we shall simply wait for the bit of breaking news.
