Joseph Parker vs Dereck Chisora Almost Done
3kingsboxing reported that former WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker (26-2, 20KO) was going to fight the ageless Dereck Chisora (31-9, 22KO). This fight was supposed to have taken place back in April. The former world champion reportedly turned down the fight. His rationale being there wasn’t enough time to prepare. He instead fought Alex Leapai later in June. Chisora fought Senard Gashi on the April date, then followed up with an impressive knockout performance over Artur Szplika in July.
Fast forward and it looks like things are back on again. Parker spoke to reporters before traveling to start training camp.
“It’s nearly there but the last four or five weeks it’s been very hard to communicate with them.”
The normally mild-mannered New Zealand fighter would go on to express an abnormal disdain for his potential opponent.
“I just want to punch Chisora in the face. He has been calling me a chicken. To be honest, as an old dog, he has more experience than me, but he has more losses than me. I want to knock him out, that’s what I want to do.”
LOOKING FORWARD
The former world champion is trying to get back into title contention in a constantly changing heavyweight division. Only ranked inside the top 10 by the WBC, a victory over a tough veteran like Chisora would definitely be a boost, especially given the facts that both Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua have separate scheduled bouts coming up. Then there is Luis Ortiz fighting for the title and the uncertain situation pertaining to Dillian Whyte’s mandatory status.
The former champion could see himself fighting Adam Knownacki in some kind of eliminator by year’s end. It’s speculated that the target date is October 26 at the O2 arena as a possible undercard to the hopefully on-again WBSS finals between champions Regis Prograis and Josh Taylor.
3kingsboxing will continue to follow the story for further developments.
