Caleb Plant and Anthony Dirrell To Fight for WBC Title Shot in October!
A world title eliminator between former champions will go down on October 15. Former IBF 168-pound champion Caleb “Sweethands” Plant (20-1, 12KOs) will face former WBC champion Anthony “The Dog” Dirrell (34-2-2, 25KOs) in a WBC title eliminator.
This match has been on Dirrell’s wish list since 2019. At the time, as WBC champion, he was calling for a unification with then IBF champion Plant. The bout now official, Plant will get a chance to backup his talk of Dirrell not being able to compete with him if they ever fought. The match will co-main event alongside former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder versus Robert Helenius.
This will be Plant’s first fight since losing to Canelo Alvarez last November in their undisputed title fight. He was stopped in the eleventh round. Plant, who’s ranked 6 in the WBO, 3 in the IBF, 2 in the WBC, and 3 in the WBA, is eager to become a champion again. A win over Dirrell places him in prime position for another world title opportunity at some point in 2023.
For Dirrell, the aging veteran is on his last legs as he seeks to become a three-time WBC champion. He’s 1-1-1 in his last three fights. In his most recent fight, he scored a sensational one-punch knockout over Marcos Hernandez in the fourth round. The Dog enters the fight ranked 11th in the IBF and 4th in the WBC and WBA.
TUSSLE FOR A TITLE OPPORTUNITY
This fight should provide a solid test for both men. It’ll be interesting, however, to see how much is left in the tank of old dog Dirrell. One thing we do know is that he has good punching power and Plant is coming off a stoppage loss. Will that haunt Sweethands come fight night and will his chin react in a similar manner as it did when he was touched up by Alvarez? We shall see on fight night.
