Shawn Porter: Spence doesn’t want to fight me
There aren’t many fighters in boxing that everybody likes. Normally, fighters will have an equal amount of haters as they do fans. However, when it comes to former two-time welterweight champion “Showtime” Shawn Porter, it’s hard to find anyone on social media speaking negatively about him.
This can be attributed to the fact the former champion is willing to fight anyone and lives up to his ring alias, Showtime. Whenever he steps in the ring, fans never leave disappointed. Since losing to unified champion Errol Spence Jr. back September 2019, things have been quiet for team Porter.
Father and trainer Kenny Porter made it clear they either want a rematch with the Texas unified champion or a fight with WBO champion Terence “Bud” Crawford. However, things never materialized on that front. Then, Spence Jr’s horrific car accident pushed back a lot of plans for Team Porter, sending them into 2020 with uncertainty.
However, things may have taken a good turn. The fan-friendly two-time champion released an update to the fans via Instagram.
“Alright y’all, Errol Spence Jr was September 2019. It is January 2020, I am married, I am happy with my life, I am happy with my career. No, I am not happy the way my decision went last year with Errol Spence.
But by no means am I unfocused, by no means am I disappointed and down. I am very much alive and very much ready to get back into the ring.
We looking at April, we are lining up to fight for the WBC interim title. We don’t have an immediate rematch clause with Errol Spence unfortunately and he doesn’t want to fight me, unfortunately.
Coming out of his accident (Spence), I feel he needs a fight back. I need to see the same Errol Spence that I saw in September in order for me to get back in the ring with him.
If he is not the same fighter, I don’t want to be the one to take advantage of that. What do I get out of that? The very first fight was a great fight. Anything less than that from Errol Spence is not the kind of fight you guys deserve and it’s not the kind fight that I want.”
That is the reason why so many fans within the boxing community like Showtime. Other fighters wouldn’t care about whether the unified champion was the same or not, they would be calling for the fight.
It is also worth mentioning that Showtime is currently ranked number one by the WBC and if he wins the interim title, he will be within seeing distance. Whoever team Porter will have to fight in April, fans can be certain they will get their money’s worth.
