Shawn Porter returns August 22
It appears that former WBC welterweight champion Shawn “Showtime” Porter will return to action on August 22 against unbeaten Sebastian Formella in a PBC main event. Mike Coppinger of The Athletic was the first to report the news.
Porter hasn’t fought since his razor-thin split decision loss to Errol Spence (26-0, 21KOs) in their unification bout last September. His opponent Sebastian Formella (22-0, 10KOs) is an unbeaten fighter who hails from Germany.
This match-up is clearly a product of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has halted everything over the last few months. A match-up of this level was expected due to the financial restrictions of the deadly pandemic.
So while this is merely a tuneup fight for Porter, this is a huge opportunity for Formella to not only shock the former two-time welterweight champion, but also put himself on the map as a legitimate contender.
