Maurice Hooker wants to fight at 147; Regis Prograis says “No!”
Former WBA junior welterweight champion Regis “Rougarou” Prograis (24-1, 20KOs) was supposed to face former WBO champion Maurice “Mighty Mo” Hooker (27-1-3, 18KOs) on April 17. However, that bout was temporarily postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now that boxing has resumed, the question is: will Prograis and Hooker’s fight be rescheduled?
At one point, that was thought to be a forgone conclusion. Now, however, that’s anything but a guarantee.
SI’s Chris Mannix revealed that trainer Brian McIntyre told him that he and Hooker want to move forward with the Prograis fight under one condition: the fight takes place at 147.
PROGRAIS SPEAKS!
Regis Prograis told 3Kingsboxing the following about the original deal with Hooker:
“Hooker makes seven figures a fight. He should be professional enough to stay in shape year round. He knows our fight was going to happen once the corona virus cleared up. Why wouldn’t he stay in some type of shape? Doesn’t make sense.
“Initially I wanted the fight to be at 140 to be in line for another title shot, but his team said he [couldn’t] make 140 so we agreed to 143. Now he’s saying he wants it at 147 and I’m not compromising again. He needs to get his shit together or they can find another opponent for me.”
PROGRAIS WANTS TO BE 140LB CHAMPION AGAIN!
“I’m not going to 147 right now. I want to be a champion again at 140 before I move up.”
Obviously, Prograis feels he compromised enough before agreeing to their original deal. Now he’s no longer willing to compromise further. The ball is now in Hooker’s court.
Hopefully things can be hashed out and this fight gets made. 3kingsboxing.com will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
