Junior Featherweight Prospect Peter McGrail Drawing High Praise
A fighter drawing rave reviews in British boxing circles is junior featherweight prospect southpaw Peter McGrail (7-0, 5 KOs). Boxing insiders in that part of the world have high hopes for the 27-year-old. Many believe he’s not too far from making a name for himself on the world stage.
McGrail had an outstanding amateur career. The native of Liverpool, England won bronze at the Olympic Youth Olympic and World Amateur champions in 2014 and a gold medal at the European Championships in 2017. After a disappointing loss in the opening round of the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, McGrail turned pro in October 2021.
A NATURAL TALENT
He’s been nothing but impressive in the paid ranks. In February 2023, McGrail signed a multi-fight deal with Matchroom Promotions. His debut with Matchroom was with a ten-round unanimous decision victory over Nicolas Nahuel Botelli in March 2023.
What makes McGrail stand out is his footwork. He is terrific at moving in and out to create punching angles and make his opponents miss. McGrail is also technically sound, doesn’t waste punches, and has fast hands and excellent upper body movement. He is very advanced for a fighter of such limited professional experience. The fact that the Brit is already fighting ten-round bouts speaks to the confidence his handler has in him.
Matchroom has been heavy in its promotional push for McGrail. They think that he will work his way into the world rankings at some point in 2024 and will eventually win a world title at either junior featherweight or featherweight. Up next for McGrail is expected to be the biggest test of his career, as he will face unbeaten Fran Mendoza (17-0, 7 KOs) on October 21 in Liverpool.
