Jose Ramirez to Garcia and Lomachenko: I’ll come to 135 and knock some sense into you!
Well well well, unified junior welterweight champion Jose Ramirez (25-0, 17KOs) is feeling really ambitious! How so? He took to his social media via his Instagram account to send a message to all the 135 pounders, in particular Ryan Garcia and Vasyl Lomachenko! He is claiming he will not only drop down to lightweight, but also knock some sense into the aforementioned fighters!
Now whether or not he was being serious or just stirring up some news isn’t completely known. However, this idea has disaster written all over it. Ramirez, a tremendous fighter at 140, is in a great position to become an undisputed junior welterweight champion with fellow unified champion Josh Taylor now apart of the Top Rank stable. So this move wouldn’t make sense at all.
HOW WOULD HE FARE AT 135??
However, if he must attempt this feat, how would it play out? In my opinion, it would be very detrimental to Ramirez and his health. At 5’10, I can’t possibly imagine anyway he makes the 135 pound limit without major consequences.
Him versus Garcia is a match-up that can happen down the line, as I expect Garcia to eventually grow into his natural frame of 147. Ramirez would have a major edge in experience and even then, that potentially wouldn’t matter due to the drastic weight cut he would endure just to get down to 135!
Him versus Lomachenko would be very similar to Pacquiao vs De La Hoya from December of 2008. Lomachenko, who’s the much faster and more athletic guy, would have a field day with Ramirez, who would look like he’s fighting in mud trying to keep up with “Hi-Tech”.
I personally won’t put much stock into this “threat” from Ramirez because it simply won’t happen. Too much risk and not enough reward.
But this is boxing and we’ve seen crazier things happen just like this before.
