Rene Santiago Pockets Wide Decision Over Ricardo Astuvilca
In his latest tour of duty, light flyweight boxer Rene “Chulo” Santiago (13-4, 9 KO’s) snagged a well-earned unanimous victory over hard-nosed Ricardo “Ricky” Astuvilca (23-3, 5 KO’s). Armed with the win, Santiago took possession of the vacant WBO international light flyweight title.
Before claiming his trophy, the two opened the match at a blistering pace, tearing into one another with thumping body shots and menacing hooks. The naked ferocity lasted for the first two rounds before giving way to Santiago steadily becoming the dominant ring general.
Chulo went about this by first fighting at range, set up behind a reliable jab. Then, using his more slippery feet, Santiago orbited the whole ring enticing Astuvilca to follow and fall into various traps. To his credit, Ricky displayed great determination and proved to be notably durable.
Despite his game attitude, Astuvilca could not make any adjustment to get past the jab or solve the movement. With this being the case, when the scorecards were read, Santiago prevailed by unanimous decision with a wide and comfortable ruling of 98-92 and 100-90 (twice).
