Edwards Dominates Ward For The Unanimous Decision Victory
In a featherweight showdown, undefeated prospect Rhys Edwards (16-0, 4KO) put on a solid performance against the veteran Thomas Patrick Ward (34-2-1, 5KO).
Edwards controlled the fight with that stiff power jab from the start of the opening bell. He couldn’t miss hitting Ward, whose head stayed on the centerline. In addition, his footwork, defense, and combination punches were a huge reason for his early dominance.
Ward finally decided to move that head and found some success with a few solid counter shots. However, the younger fighter’s jab and body shots continued to land with regularity.
In the middle rounds, the veteran used pressure to force Edwards into the corner and unloaded hard shots. He even landed a hard left hook that turned the momentum of the fight back in his favor.
Yet, Edwards found another gear and began landing quick combinations while fighting off the backfoot. He dug deep by responding with combinations after taking some hard body shots.
In the closing rounds, Ward continued marching forward, hoping to land something big on the younger challenger. Yet, a fatigued Edwards did a good job closing the show with the jab and hard body shots.
One judge scored it 99-91, and the other two had it 98-92 in favor of Edwards. This was a good win and he showed grit with ring IQ by using the jab down the stretch.
