Richardson Hitchins Stops Kambosos and Disrespects Devin Haney
In his first title defense, IBF super lightweight champion Richardson Hitchins (20-0, 8 KO’s) easily trounced the accomplished George Kambosos Jr. Over the course of eight rounds, the Brooklyn native methodically dismantled and stopped him with a nasty body shot. With the highlight reel win in the bag, he swiftly called out former undisputed lightweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (32-0, 15 KO’s).
“I’m going into free agency now, so it’s a lot of options and I want the big fights. After my last fight, I called Teofimo [Lopez] out right away. Obviously he has other plans. But I am looking here at the camera – Devin Haney, fuck you nigga, let’s fight! Devin Haney next, fuck Devin Haney and Bill Haney! Pussies!”
Haney, along with his father and trainer, Bill Haney, have recently engaged Hitchins in a social media war of words. In this respect, it should come as no surprise that Hitchins was blaring this specific war horn.
STRIKE WHILE THE IRON IS HOT!
This fight would come at a great time for both competitors. Hitchins is coming off the aforementioned nifty knockout of Kambosos and Haney is likewise coming off a unanimous decision win over Jose Carlos Ramirez. Although, the general boxing public was underwhelmed with The Dream’s latest victory.
It is the common perception that he moved too much, which many attribute to Haney’s being gun shy following his infamous duel with Ryan Garcia. Despite the criticism that’s been hoisted on his shoulders, Haney remains one of the hottest topics in the sport. This coupled with his budding persona as a heel could be a formula for success all by itself.
OLD FASHIONED STANDOFF?
Toss in a champion, fresh off a memorable and flashy win like Hitchins and there is a potentially terrific fight in the making. The only significant hurdle to be negotiated is the issue of weight. Haney has recently moved up in weight and has ambitions to fight at welterweight. At the same time, The Dream states that in this chapter of his career, big fights trump belts.
Yet, when checking his latest post via Twitter, Haney seems to be holding firm on his claim to competing at 147. So, just that quickly, the ball is back in Richardson Hitchins’ court!
