Robert Garcia Claims To Have Been Working With Anthony Joshua For A While
Former unified heavyweight champion Anthony “AJ” Joshua (24-2, 22KO) shocked social media when it was revealed his new trainer was the world-renown Robert Garcia. Joshua has enlisted the services of Garcia for the upcoming rematch with unified champion Oleksandr Usyk. Fans immediately questioned if he was the right man for the job.
After losing the heavyweight titles, Joshua went on a very public search for a new trainer. He wanted to get out of his comfort zone and decided to travel abroad to the United States looking to shake things up. AJ would go silent during the search, yet, fans were still getting information on some of the trainers.
Among the names were Vergil Hunter, Eddy Reynoso and Ronnie Shields. One of the things that attracted Joshua to picking Garcia was his vast experience and knowledge on the championship level.
Garcia’s resume is stacked with world champions like Kelly Pavlik, Brandon Rios, Brian Viloria, Abner Mares, Jesus Cuellar, Nonito Donaire, and brother Mikey Garcia. Now, he will be attempting to train his first heavyweight to become a champion.
GARCIA HAS BEEN WORKING WITH AJ
With the fight looking to take place in August, the boxing community questioned whether there is enough time to gel as a cohesive unit. During an interview with IFL TV, Garcia revealed when he first started training the former unified champion.
“Anthony [Joshua] already knows what he has to do. We’re going to have three months in training camp. We’ve already been doing it for a couple of weeks. It’s going to be a full training camp. Plus I’ve been here since December people don’t know that.”
This new version of Team Joshua is committed to being fully prepared for the upcoming task of regaining the titles.
