Jesse Rodriguez Signs Extension with Matchroom Promotions!
There is no hotter name right now among hardcore heads than reigning WBC junior bantamweight champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez (16-0, 11 KOs). The 22-year-old from San Antonio, Texas is fresh off defending the title for the first time with an impressive eight-round stoppage over the previous two-time WBC 115-pound champ Srisaket Sor Rungvisai on June 25. Now more good news has come down the pike.
EXCITED TO FURTHER THE RELATIONSHIP WITH MATCHROOM
Matchroom Boxing has announced that Rodriguez extended his contract with the promotional giant. The details of the extension were not made public to the media. But in an official press release from Matchroom, the champ said the following:
“I am delighted to sign with Eddie and Matchroom and so excited for the future […] it’s only the beginning, and there’s so much more that I can achieve.
[…] We will talk as a team, but I want to keep coming home to San Antonio. I hope everyone that came enjoyed the show; it means everything to me for my city to show out.
The plan has been to go to 112 pounds and win a title there, but I’m open to fighting anyone. I want to keep improving and fighting the best. Every fighter wants to be on that pound for pound list, and you get there by fighting the best and beating them.”
INFINITE POSSIBILITIES
While pundits have viewed Rodriguez as a future world champ, his rise in 2022 has been meteoric. Previously a top contender at 108 pounds, he was offered the opportunity to fight for the then-vacant WBC title at 115. With only six days’ notice, Team Rodriguez jumped on the offer. Seizing the moment, “Bam” out-boxed previous junior bantamweight champion, Carlos Cuadras to become the youngest world champion in the sport. He followed that up with a dominating performance against Sor Rungvisai. Now, Matchroom is pitching the talented Texan as a future star.
They have openly talked about putting him in the ring with the likes of WBA Super champ Juan Francisco Estrada and lower-weight modern-day legend Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez at 115. Rodriguez could also move back down to 112 and face either WBC flyweight champion Julio Cesar Martinez or WBO 112-pound champ Junto Nakatani.
Real fight fans should be ecstatic over this news. Rodriguez has the talent and the “it” factor to live up to the high expectations folks have for him. Matchroom is deeply invested in the lower-weight divisions and wants to make the biggest and best available fights possible. Score this as a win for all sides.
