Devin Haney Thinks Ryan Garcia Plateaued in the Amateurs

WBC junior welterweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (31-0, 15KO) believes that challenger “King Ry” Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20KO) is levels below him. In addition, he feels that King Ry is still an unproven fighter.

The boxing public has wondered if Garcia will pull out of their upcoming showdown on April 20. His erratic behavior on social media has even The Dream prepared to fight someone else if necessary.

However, the two remain slotted to face each other as the promotional machine moves on. While sitting across the table from Garcia on DAZN Boxing’s Face Off, Haney said the Californian hasn’t improved since their amateur days.

“I don’t think that Ryan has got much better since the amateurs. Ryan fights the same way and does the same things. I mean obviously, he’s gotten bigger and stronger, but it’s the same thing . . . I think he’s a one-trick pony.”

As they continued to go back and forth, the WBC champion focused on King Ry quitting against multi-divisional champion Abdul Wahid (Gervonta Davis).

“I feel like I’m levels above him. I feel like he hasn’t fought on that elite level. But, when he did, he quit . . . the world watched him take a knee, the world watched him Colin Kaepernick.”

“What has he really done on the elite level? . . . So, you have that in you. It’s installed in you. We did see you quit.”

Several pundits agree with the WBC champion in questioning King Ry’s resume. While Haney, Wahid, and Teofimo Lopez have won titles in multiple divisions, Garcia has spent time being a social media darling.

In conclusion, The Dream has a point: there is a possibility that his rival could mentally check out if things get hard during the fight.
