Rolando Romero Changes his Stance on Fighting Ryan Garcia

WBA super lightweight champion Rolando “Rolly” Romero (15-1, 13 KO’s) has finally shown some signs of life. For the first time since his controversial May 13 duel against Ismael Barroso, Romero has not only alluded to a specific return target date but called out a lone opponent. In a recent tweet, Rolly took to his social media to call out popular super lightweight “King Ry” Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KO’s)

FACT OR CAP?

On the surface, this technically is a solid call-out. Following his latest win, over Oscar Duarte on December 2, King Ry repeatedly expressed an interest in squaring off his Romero. Unfortunately, at that time, Rolly was consistently sticking to his story that he was recovering from injury and not yet thinking about returning to the ring.

Since his early December call-outs, Garcia has moved on to staging negotiations with WBC super lightweight champion Devin Haney. Similar to his call-outs, Garcia has routinely taken to his social media accounts to give vague public debriefings of his on-going talks with the Team Haney. Given this, one has to wonder if Rolly is being sincere in chasing this match or is simply aiming to troll.

CAN ROLLY STEAL THE SHOW?

To obtain the biggest fight of his career, versus Regular WBA 135-pound champion Gervonta Davis, Romero launched a full-on social media campaign. After securing the match and getting in the ring, Rolly was knocked out in the sixth round. His substandard outing with Barroso was his first duel since the Tank loss. Therefore, without question, Ryan Garcia would be a huge prizefight for Romero; especially following the Barroso debacle.

If Romero is serious, it’ll be interesting to see how Garcia reacts. Both The Dream and Rolly bring titles to the table and each will bring a respectable fan base as well. Between the two however, Romero is the far less polished fighter.

Said to say, Rolly would appear to be the lower hanging fruit. Also, if Garcia fought and beat Romero first, a later match with The Dream would then be a more meaningful unification bout. Thankfully, no matter how the next move plays out, 3Kings Boxing will be here to report the news and implications.
