Former unified super bantamweight champion Daniel “The Baby Faced Assassin” Roman (29-3-1, 10ko) fought a fan-friendly war against tough challenger Ricardo Espinoza Franco (25-4, 21ko). Afterwards, he called for a fight with the winner between WBA ‘Regular’ champion Brandon Figueroa and WBC champion Luis Nery.

Roman has been eager to get back into the championship picture. He lost his unified status against Murodjon Akhmadaliev back in January 2020. According to The Baby Faced Assassin, he won the WBC mandatory spot after beating former champion Juan Carlos Payano in September 2020.

ROMAN WANTS HIS TITLE SHOT NOW

The Baby Faced Assassin struggled in the first half of the fight. However, he would turn things up and bloody the face of Franco with a barrage of left uppercuts en route to an unanimous decision victory.

In the post-fight interview, Roman wasted little time in staking his claim to fighting the winner of the main event championship bout.

“I am the mandatory for the WBC. I want a title shot, now. The people want to see it. Give me the winner of tonight, Nery or Figueroa”

“[On who wins between Nery or Figueroa] For me, it doesn’t matter. A fight is a fight. Both of them are warriors. I am here to fight the best.”

SORRY, BUT UNIFICATION TRUMPS MANDATORY

Figueroa lifted the WBC belt away from Nery after landing a brutal left hook to the body that sent the hard-punching former champion to the canvas gasping for air.

Roman is the mandatory challenger. However, the newly crowned WBC champion is scheduled to face the WBO Super Bantamweight champion Stephen “Cool Boy Steph” Fulton. This mega-unification fight is set for September 11.

In any other circumstance, Figueroa vs Roman would be a great fight. However, the boxing community is excited about the unification match-up between two of the sport’s biggest young, undefeated champions.
