Gabe Rosado and Jaime Munguia are still calling for one another

Following his last victory, over Kamil Szeremeta, middleweight boxer Jaime Munguia (37-0, 30 KO’s) called out “King” Gabe Rosado (26-13-1, 15 KO’s). Many viewed this as a curious selection as Munguia is ranked #1 (WBO), #1 (WBC), #4 (IBF) and #4 (WBA). With his standings in the WBO and WBC he has direct routes to middleweight champions Demetrius Andrade (WBO) and Jermall Charlo (WBC). So it’s anyone’s guess as to why the former world champion does not shoot for higher aspirations. Instead, as he told the Sports Journal, he is sniffing around looking for a fall rumble with Rosado.

“I think that a fight with Rosado can take place in September or October… but that does not depend on me.”

No disrespect to Rosado but he is not relevant to the upper echelons of the division in any shape or form. While it is his own personal goal, most in the industry would be surprised if the Philly native ever captures a world title. This is why it’s such a head-scratcher that Munguia is gunning for Rosado when he could be gunning to titles. On the other hand however, the 24-year-old Mexican fighter has always been moved gingerly by his Golden Boy Promotion handlers.

BLAZE OF GLORY

For his part, Rosado probably couldn’t care less about what Munguia’s motivations are. King Gabe is coming off a stunning third round upset victory of Bektemir Melikuziev. The hard-hitting Uzbekistani was being moved aggressively and sought to make a quick meal of Rosado. Instead of collecting the well-known veteran’s scalp however, Melikuziev was dumped on his face by a destructive right hook.

Rosado understands that he is firmly in the twilight of his professional boxing career and realizes that there is no time to waste. Catapulting himself into a bout with Munguia would be a great way to capitalize off his last win. Despite the overly cautious manner in which Munguia has been matched, he still is a good name. Provided that King Gabe defeats the Mexican, he would certainly enjoy a surge in the rankings. So for his part, Rosado continues to return the show of mutual interest.
