Roy Jones Jr Acknowledges The Danger Ahead
Well before the announcement of Roy Jones Jr (66-9, 47 KO’s) versus “Iron” Mike Tyson (50-6, 44 KO’s) exhibition there were a number of former fighters talking about making ring returns.
In fact, Jones was not a part of any of the initial discussions. At the outset, it was Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Shannon Briggs and Oliver McCall and a few others making the most noise trying to drum up interest in these novel showdowns.
So there are many who wonder how it came to be that Tyson will square off with Jones in an upcoming September spectacle? Luckily, Jones sat down with Fight Hub Tv and provided a compact explanation.
“They called and asked me would I be willing to fight. Mike wanted to fight me. I said, ‘why not? Let’s go!’ I talked to Mike. He wanted to do an exhibition and he feels that I am the easiest person to make a fight with.
“I’m an easy person to deal with because I was my own boss for so long. So he feels like I was the guy that could come, not bring all the boxing promoters and everything else to it.
“I could come to the table myself and make a fight. He thought I was the easiest guy to make a deal with.”
CRAZY AS CRAZY DOES
Naturally, when talking about a pending fight with Tyson, it’s impossible not to bring up his wild and zany antics of the past. Even though he is now in his fifties, it’s hard to forget his countless verbal outbursts, tussles at press conferences or his most famous instance of biting a plug out of Holyfield’s ear.
So when questioned about how he would prepare for such an unpredictable character, Jones supplied a reasonable response.
“We know he going to do something crazy. We just don’t know what! Whether he going to try to take my head off or he going to try to bite my ear off, but he going to do something crazy!
“That’s why it’s so fun! You know he going to do something crazy but guess what? I’m going to do something crazy back! So it is what it is!”
Giving an attitude and expectation such as this it is very hard to foresee this bout not having some very memorable action.
