Ruiz looking to get back to form.
Andy Ruiz picks up his second victory after his loss to Joseph Parker in 2016. His opponent, 38-year old Kevin Johnson, once a formidable contender really showed his age tonight.
Ruiz had no trouble dictating the pace and controlling the action against the older Johnson. His ring generalship and youth made the fight look like another day in the gym.
Johnson at one point in his career was seen as one of the toughest heavyweight contenders. The fact he was able to go twelve rounds with the hard-hitting Vitali Klitschko got him some praise even in a loss.
However 2009 was nine years ago and that time has taken a toll on the veteran. He is now 3-7 out of his last 10 fights while losing two by knockout.
Ruiz is hungry for another crack at a title but he has a lot of work ahead of him. He is currently ranked outside of the top fifteen in every major sanctioning body. The WBC has him ranked the highest at sixteen.
The official judges scored the fight 99-91 and 97-93 (x2). Ruiz improves to 31-1 with 20 knockouts.
