Andy Ruiz to Return Against Luis Ortiz! Tyrone Spong Bout Postponed!
After announcing that former unified heavyweight champion Andy “The Destroyer” Ruiz (34-2, 22KOs) would be returning to the ring to face heavyweight Tyrone Spong (14-0, 13KOs) on July 16 in Mexico, Triller has done an about-face! Unbeknownst to them was the fact that Ruiz had previously signed a contract to face two-time heavyweight title challenger Luiz Ortiz (32-2-2, 28KOs) next.
According to ESPN, the president of Triller Fight Club, David Tetreault, wasn’t aware that Ruiz had a fight with Ortiz lined up. He would go on to say that Triller and PBC are working towards a way to reschedule the Ruiz vs Spong fight for a later date that works with the Al Haymon-run company.
Obviously, this news is great as a Ruiz vs Ortiz fight has major appeal. Plus, it will be a much more competitive fight than a fight with Spong would’ve been. Furthermore, it gives both guys a shot at gaining ground on another world title opportunity, which they both want badly.
Ruiz, who is currently ranked #5 (WBO), #9 (IBF), #5 (WBC), and #11 (WBA), hasn’t fought since defeating Chris Arreola last May. Ortiz, who is ranked #7 (WBO), #2 (IBF), and #7 (WBC), overcame two knockdowns to defeat former IBF heavyweight champion Charles Martin in the sixth round by TKO in January.
