Jermaine Franklin Emerges as a Possible Foe for Anthony Joshua
Two-time unified heavyweight champion Anthony “AJ” Joshua (24-3, 22KO) has another name revealed as a possible opponent. According to United Kingdom’s Daily Star, Jermaine “989 Assassin” Franklin (21-1, 14KO) is under heavy consideration as the next opponent.
As reported by 3Kings Boxing, Australian Demsey McKean, in an interview with International Boxing News, claimed to be the frontrunner to fight Joshua on the targeted return of April 1.

The Daily Star proclaims that McKean is not expected to be selected. This will raise a few eyebrows, considering Matchroom Promoter Eddie Hearn claimed Joshua will fight someone ranked in the top 15. Although the Australian is ranked by two major sanctioning bodies, Franklin generated enough buzz around his name to garner some respect.
FRANKLIN’S PERFORMANCE COULD HAVE EARNED AN AJ FIGHT
The news of Franklin should not throw fans off track, as these things are typical when a fighter of Joshua’s caliber is preparing for a big return. Despite coming off a loss to one-time title challenger Dillian Whyte, Franklin still has value as several fans were shocked by his performance in the fight. 989 Assassin raised his game and fought hard to the bitter end before losing via majority decision (115-115, 116-112, 116-112) to Whyte.
Nonetheless, his first career defeat was overshadowed by his performance, which could lead to a big payday against Joshua. AJ is expected to be training in the United States and Derrick James is rumored as the new trainer.
Since losing two consecutive fights to unified champion Oleksandr Usyk, the hunt to get AJ back in the winning column has been a top priority. The boxing community continues standing by for the official return announcement.
