Gary Antuanne Russell Is Looking To Stop Alberto Puello

Top junior welterweight contender Gary Antuanne Russell (17-0, 17KO) is looking to make a statement by knocking out former WBA champion Alberto “La Avispa” Puello (22-0, 10KO). Russell believes that the fight won’t go the distance and is calling for a ninth-round stoppage.

On June 15, Russell will battle La Avispa for the WBC interim title. The winner will move one step closer to challenging for a world title. With so much on the line, fans can expect both fighters to bring their A-game.

HE IS CALLING HIS SHOT

While speaking with FightHype, the number-two WBC-ranked contender claimed the plan is to get a stoppage.

“What I see, as far as a game plan, is me executing a little bit of inside game as usual . . . if you got a tall, long, range-y fighter, you’re the shorter fighter, it’s best for you to get on the inside. People keep asking me am I looking for a knockout; That’s the plan. I’m not going to go in there looking for it, though . . . round nine, I could possibly get him up out of there.”

Russell will be fighting a second undefeated fighter in Puello. In his last outing, he flatlined Kent Cruz in the first round. Yet, he shouldn’t dismiss the former WBA champion who will be extra hungry to regain a championship.

La Avispa was stripped of the title after testing positive for a banned substance in the lead up to a fight against Rolando Romero. Puello is going into this fight with a lot to prove. Being a former world champion gives him a slight edge in the experience department.

Boxing fans can catch this fight as part of the undercard to the Gervonta Davis versus Frank Martin showdown live on Amazon Prime PPV.
