Sampson Boxing Wins Josh Taylor-Apinun Khongsong Purse Bid!
Sampson Boxing has won the purse bid to stage the upcoming fight between WBA/IBF World Super Lightweight champion Josh Taylor (16-0, 12 KOs) and Apinun Khongsong (16-0, 13 KOs). Khongsong who is the IBF’s mandatory super lightweight contender. The purse bid was held on January 24 at the IBF’s offices in Springfield, New Jersey.
Khongsong would sign his co-promotional contract with Sampson Boxing on January 10, 2020. That makes this winning bid, $1.320 million, a surprise win less than a month later.
They outbid Top Rank ($1.26 million), who scored a coup when they signed of Taylor away from Cyclone Promotions.
Following the proceedings, Sampson Boxing announced they plan to stage the Taylor-Khongsong fight in England within 90 days.
As the world champion, Taylor will receive 65% of the purse split ($858,000) while challenger’s take will be 35% ($462,000).
For those unaware with Sampson Boxing, the promotional company is run by Sampson Lewkowicz. Among the more notable fighters within his stable is current WBC World Super Middleweight champion David Benavides and Jeison Rosario. Rosario, January 18, scored a fifth round upset stoppage over Julian Williams to win the WBA/IBF World Super Welterweight titles.
This was a surprise win for the company, beating out one of the true power players in the sport. No specific date or locale has been made as of press time, but as always, stay tuned to 3KingsBoxing for updates when the fight is finalized and formally announced.
