Leo Santa Cruz Says He’ll Fight Gervonta Davis in the Summer
For an extended period of time now, significant talks throughout the industry have eluded to a 2020 showdown between WBA super world super featherweight champion Leo “El Terremoto” Santa Cruz (37-1-1, 19 KO’s) and WBA world lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (23-0, 22 KO’s). Their promoters have hinted at it. Also, recently Davis plastered a mock fight poster of himself and El Terremoto on all of his social media accounts.
WE GOT A SUMMER FIGHT?!
Yet with all the positive energy suggesting the fight, there has been no official word given. However, in a recent interview with Fight Hype, Santa Cruz supplied the world with the next best thing! While it was not an official announcement, he assured that all parties are on board. He claims the fight is done and the only thing lacking is a venue and actual fight date.
“I think the fight against Gervonta Davis is for sure. I think they already agreed and we’re going to fight. But I think they’re still deciding on a date, we don’t know the date yet. I think we’re going to [fight] probably toward the summer.”
[On a fight a with Davis] “I know it’s going to be a hard fight, I know a lot of people don’t believe that I could beat him. Probably a lot of people think I am too small for him. But I am going to prove those people wrong, that I am a warrior, I am going to go out there and give me best.”
“I am going to go out there and try to give him the best fight of his life and beat him. I want to beat one of the best. If I beat him then it’ll put my name up there with one of the best and that’s what I want.”
MISTER CAN GET IT TOO!
Since his last fight with Miguel Flores, Cruz has almost religiously maintained a couple consistent talking points. One of which being he is not a scary fighter. He wants the world to know that he is not afraid of anyone and this why he is pursuing Davis with such vigor.
“I know that Tank is a really dangerous fighter, but that’s why I am taking it, to prove to the fans that I am not scared of nobody.”
Although, there is another boxer that the world has wanted to see El Terremoto face as well, and that’s WBC world featherweight champion “Mr.” Gary Russell Jr (31-1, 18 KO’s).
Cruz does acknowledge that Russell is a great fighter, and he wants to face him. However, Cruz feels that Mr. pales in comparison to Davis as a potential next foe.
“I think that Tank Davis is a better fighter than Gary Russell. I think he is a better fighter than Gary Russell and if people see me fight Tank Davis, then they’re going to know I am not scared of Gary Russell… he is stronger, he has more power and that’s what we want. We want to take the risk and go out there and show the people that we are warriors.”
However, while Cruz clearly is of the mindset that Tank is the more treacherous opponent, he is not against facing Russell either. If given the opportunity, El Terremoto would love to mix it up with the DC native.
“Of course, those are the two names that I said after my last fight. I said the two names that I am looking for in 2020 are Tank Davis and Gary Russell, Hopefully I get the win against Tank Davis, of course I would get Gary Russell. Hopefully he moves up to 130. I know he is willing to go up to 130 and we get him.”
