Leo Santa Cruz Moving Up to Super Featherweight.
Well its official! The ambitious “El Terremoto” Leo Santa Cruz (36-1-1, 19 KO’s) is moving up to the super featherweight to hunt a title in a fourth division. Earlier this year, on February 16, Santa Cruz made a successful third defense of his WBA super world featherweight title against Rafael Rivera.
Now, his goal is elevate four more pounds to challenge the champions at 130.
While he does not have an official opponent at the moment, El Terremoto has officially begun his training camp with every intention on fighting in the new division this year. Cruz shared this interesting information in an interview conducted with Crystina Poncher.
“I’m fighting in November […] we’re going to move up to 130 for now […] I want to move up to 130, like I say and get another title. That’s my goal now. I want to be a four division champion, so I am not going to stop until I do it.
“[…] We don’t know the opponent. I think we’re getting the opponents to see and we’re going to see what happens.”
Cruz would be a welcome addition to the already thick super featherweight landscape. Although he didn’t specify if he was eyeing any of the champions in particular, it will be fun to see who the voluminous Mexican puncher targets or, which of the belt holders tosses a target on his back!
At the moment the super featherweight belts are held by Miguel Berchelt (WBC), Jamel Herring (WBO), Gervonta Davis (WBA) and Tevin Farmer (IBF). Previously, we reported on Santa Cruz expressing interest in facing Davis for his title. However, it remains to be seen if that fight will actually be made as a debut bout.
Althought, pairing El Terremoto against any of these men would make for sure fire action fights!
3kingsboxing will continue to supply all the latest updates on this intriguing and ambitious move from Leo Santa Cruz.
