Billy Joe Saunders looking to go in a different direction!
In a surprising move, 3kingsboxing.com has learned WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders has split with long-time promoter Frank Warren. This move comes from left field, as there were no signs of discontent and the split was amicable.
Warren and Saunders both spoke publicly on the matter.
“I’m personally very fond of Billy Joe, and I wish him every success in the remainder of his career.”
Frank Warren, Promoter
“I want to say a massive thank you to Frank for everything he has done for my career. I’ll always be appreciative. We’ll stay close.”
Billy Joe Saunders – WBO Super Middleweight Champion
Warren helped guide Saunders to his first ever world title when he defeated Andy Lee back in December of 2015. He was also instrumental in making him a two-division champion more recently against Shefat Isufi in May.
With Saunders now a free agent, he’ll be sure to get pursued by all of the major promotional organizations. In opinion, given the landscape of his division, two of the other champions (Caleb Plant and Anthony Dirrell) are under the PBC banner. In addition, some of the top contenders like David Benavidez, Caleb Truax, Peter Quillin, etc. are under that banner as well.
Eddie Hearn may be the best fit with WBA champion Callum Smith being a possible opponent, as well as, WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade. Hearn of course also has ties to Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin under the DAZN banner; two fights along with Smith Saunders has expressed wanting for quite some time.
