Floyd Schofield Doubles Down on Wanting Shakur Stevenson Next

To his credit, as he was forecasted to do, lightweight contender Floyd “Kid Austin” Schofield (18-0, 12 KO’s) defeated Rene Giron by a comfortable points win. Even with the wide margin of victory, Schofield had anything but an easy night in the office. He was forced to work hard and several telltale holes in his overly aggressive mentality were put on display once again. Nevertheless, in his post-fight interview, Kid Austin was quick to resume calling out WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson (22-0, 10 KO’s).

“You already know what I want to look for next, Twitterson [Stevenson]; he talks too much. I want to give the fans the fights they want to see. But we will see where Oscar and them take me, but everybody knows what I want . . . Shakur is not Rene – Shakur doesn’t have the power like Rene. You know he don’t have that dog in him, so it’s going to be a very one-sided fight, in my opinion. But we will see when the time comes, I will back up what I say!”

WHAT THINGS MAY COME?

At the present moment, Stevenson is giving all indications that he is available for a showdown with Schofield. Somewhat ironically, Kid Austin’s own Golden Boy Promotions is not so gung-ho about moving the young fighter at such a swift pace. While providing his post-fight commentary, Oscar De La Hoya explained how he thought it was time to greatly slow down Schofield’s pace to allow him more time to develop.

Honestly speaking, Stevenson is lightyears more advanced than Rene Giron. While styles do make fights, it does appear that Stevenson is currently outside of Schofield’s present meal plan. With their backstory though, there is no indication that this rivalry will die down any time soon. Nor does it look like Team Schofield is going to stop calling out Stevenson and the other top candidates in the division. Yet, following this mid-grade-at-best win, it will be noteworthy to see how Schofield is matched in his next prizefight.
