Shakur Stevenson Eying Vasiliy Lomachenko As A Backup Plan!

Let lightweight boxer “Fearless” Shakur Stevenson (20-0, 10 KO’s) tell it, he and his team are scrambling to make a big time fight. If all goes according to plan, they would lock down undisputed champion Devin Haney down to a fall or winter time duel. The probability favors the finalization of a showdown for Haney versus WBC super lightweight champion Regis Prograis, Yet, if he doesn’t get Haney, Fearless is confident he could square-off against three-division champion Vasiliy “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko (17-3, 11 KO’s).

In speaking with FightHype, Stevenson discussed his thoughts on Lomachenko being a “backup plan.”

“If [Haney] he don’t want to fight the next available option would probably be Lomachenko, so anyone of those guys I’m willing to get in the ring right now. If Haney don’t fight him [Loma] and he [Haney] don’t fight me, that leaves me and Lomachenko, right?

“So being that it’s us two left, I think we should rock out. I don’t think none of those dudes can beat me though.”

Shakur Stevenson – Two-Division Champion

I TOLD YOU ALREADY

There is ample substance to the point that Stevenson is trying to make. They are each premiere names in the division. Skill-wise, they are both elite and both are Top Rank stablemates. Also they are stacked on top of one another according to the sanctioning bodies. Stevenson is ranked #1 (WBO), #2 (WBC), #4 (IBF) and #4 (WBA), while Loma is ranked #1 (WBC) #2 (WBO), #3 (IBF) and #3 (WBA).

Despite all these favorable elements seemingly steering them together, to date Lomachenko has not shown equal interest in the match. When Stevenson previously reached out to Loma via social media the Ukrainian shut the bout down quietly and politely.

Perhaps something has changed, but there is no indication that Loma is in the market for Stevenson. Thankfully no matter what new twists and turns come about in this situation, 3Kings Boxing will be here to report the news!
