Claressa Shields Beats Danielle Perkins for Undisputed
After a hard-fought match, multi-divisional champion Claressa “T-Rex” Shields (16-0, 3 KO’s) defeated the towering Danielle “New Era” Perkins (5-1, 2 KO’s) by way of unanimous decision in this heavyweight affair.
Anyone with at least one working eye could see that Perkins’ height was going to be an issue for Shields and it was. To contend with this disadvantage, T-Rex would either jab her way in with a stutter step or lay on her back foot and seduce Perkins into catching counters.
Overall, Shields’ hand speed and power gave New Era pause in the early goings. However, as the fight wore, on she became more comfortable. With comfort, her volume and aggression increased. Unfortunately for Perkins, her accuracy did not follow suit.
While game and charging forward, New Era couldn’t consistently keep leather on Shields. T-Rex didn’t suffer the same deficiency. Instead she connected with the greater volume and quality shots. This was punctuated with a crushing right hook that crumbled Perkins like a skyscraper’s controlled demolition in the closing moments of the tenth. New Era dizzily found her feet but it was already the cherry on top.
When the duel went to the cards, Shields claimed a unanimous decision win to the tune of 100-89, 97-92 and 99-90. With the spoils of war, Shields is now the undisputed heavyweight champion.
