Ginjiro Shigeoka destroys Clyde Azarcon in 72 seconds!
Teenage Japanese sensation Ginjiro Shigeoka continued his fast track to what he hopes is a world mimimumweight title as he destroyed Clyde Azarcon in a mere 72 seconds to win the WBO Asia Pacific title at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo.
The 5’0″ dynamo looks like he’s the genuine article!
The Breakdown
The 19-year old Shigeoka (4-0, 3 KO’s) meant business from the opening bell.
30 seconds into the first round, he stepped in and connected with a left hook to the liver of Azarcon, who crouched then went down. Though he got up, he was still visibly troubled.
Sensing a possible first round stoppage, Shigeoka went on the attack; targeting the body of the Filipino.
Azarcon tried to fight back with wild shots in an effort to keep Shigeoka at bay.
Showing patience beyond his years, the Japanese prospect intelligently backed off briefly.
Then, he struck again with another devastating left-hand to the body, dropping Azarcon for the 10-count.
The official time of stoppage was 1 minute 12 seconds into the very first round!
Climbing The Ranks
With the win Shigeoka matches the Japanese record for fewest fights to a title. This ties the likes of Kosei Tanaka and Naoya Inoue.
The minimumweight mighty mite won a title 10 months and 2 days after his debut, surpassing the record of stablemate and current junior flyweight lineal champion Hiroto Kyoguchi by one week.
Prior to the fight, Shigeoka predicted a fourth or fifth found stoppage.
Afterwards, he said he’s been working on the left-hand to the body in training and stated his ultimate goal is to become a world champion. Capturing the WBO Asia-Pacific belt will assure him a top 10 ranking within the WBO world sanctioning body at the very least.
The Japanese boxing media has tabbed him as possibly the next great fighter from that country.
We at 3KingsBoxing think so highly of Shigeoka, that we’ve covered him since the start of his career.
With performances like he put on today in Toyko, Shigeoka has the look of a fighter that will indeed live up to the hype.
