Callum Smith vs Billy Joe Saunders super middleweight unification bout in the works?

According to WBA world super middleweight champion Callum Smith, Frank Warren, who is the promoter of WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders, has sent an official offer for a unification bout between the two British world champions.

In an interview with talkSPORT, Smith gave details.

“I do believe they have made an offer. I’m not sure the ins and outs of it. I do believe it was a 50/50 split on BT Sport pay-per-view. That is the only detail I know so far. We will speak through it (this week) and if that is the next move, then that is the next move.”

Of intriguing note, Saunders has a deal with BT Sport Box Office. This would see Saunders receiving A-side status on accepting Warren’s offer. In spite of that interesting slant it is Saunders who is in greater need of the fight.

Smith simply has more options. Long rumored to be in the Canelo Alvarez future opponent sweepstakes, Smith knows he has more options.

“I am in a good position. There are a lot of big fights out there for me. The next years of my career are very exciting and I want to fight the best. I want to know how good I am myself.”

Smith also re-iterated that a fight with Alvarez is his main target. Not only is there a possibility for that fight down the line, Smith is also in a better position to fight the likes of IBF super middleweight champion Caleb Plant, as well as the winner of the upcoming bout between WBC champion Anthony Dirrell and former champ David Benavidez.

A fight between Smith and Saunders would not create much buzz internationally. Although, it would be pretty meaningful in the UK. Besides, unification bouts are always a positive thing when it comes to boxing.
