Errol Spence V Yordens Ugas Set For April 16 In Arlington, Texas!
Errol “The Truth” Spence (27-0, 21 KOs) is back after not fighting in 2021. He will be taking on WBA welterweight champion Yordenis “54 Milagros” Ugas (27-4, 12 KOs) on April 16 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Spence will be putting his IBF and WBC titles on the line.
How We Got Here
After being scheduled to face Manny “Pac Man” Pacquiao on August 21, a detached retina forced Spence to withdraw from their highly anticipated bout. The injury paved the way for Ugas to step in for the opportunity of a lifetime. Once in the ring with Pacquiao, Ugas showed the world why it was a bad idea for Pacquiao to accept such a fight on short notice. The Cuban boxer masterfully out-boxed the future hall of famer over twelve rounds and was awarded a unanimous decision.
In the immediate aftermath, Ugas called for a unification against Spence. Spence, who previously vowed he would be back to fight the winner, gladly welcomed a fight with Ugas.
However, boxing politics almost got in the way of this bout. The WBA ordered Ugas to partake in a four-man tournament, clearly to the dismay of the WBA champ. After a back and forth, WBA president Gilberto Mendoza did the right thing by approving Ugas to face Spence in a high-stakes unification bout.
With the date and location of the fight set, both men can fully lock-in and prepare for a huge fight. The winner will be one belt away from becoming the undisputed welterweight champion. However, to achieve that goal, they’ll have to get by the WBO champion, Terence “Bud” Crawford, who awaits them.
