Steve Claggett Defends His Spot As A Challenger to Teofimo Lopez
There is no doubt that junior welterweight fighter Steve “The Dragon” Claggett (38-7-2, 26 KO’s) will step in the ring as a massive underdog on June 29. In that prizefight, Claggett will face WBO 140-pound champion Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (20-1, 13 KO’s) in the biggest fight of his career.
Naturally the Canadian is brimming with confidence despite the overwhelming amount of people strongly counting him out. Instead of focusing on those negative viewpoints, as he highlighted in their recent presser, he is only concerned with his own self-belief and fight preparation.
“This is something I worked my whole life for and I feel like I have great momentum right now, so it’s the time for me! I don’t really care what other people say. You can only control your own perspective, so I do what I know is right and I prepared like I know. I sacrificed what I did and I put in the work.”
SERIOUS CONTENDER OR CANADIAN BACON?!
While it is great to hear that Claggett will be riding high on a cloud of self-belief, his seven previous losses are rather glaring. When giving his resume a once-over, one will find that the majority of his professional duels were staged in his native Canada.
Yet, of six fights fought in America, The Dragon has lost four of them. Putting this to the side however, Claggett is on a nine-fight winning streak. And of those nine contests, only two opponents have made it to the final bell. This string of victories no doubt will ensure that Claggett enters the ring thinking very highly of himself.
So, sooner rather than later, we will find out if Claggett has what it takes to turn in a massive upset victory. Or, we will watch as he fulfills expectations by falling victim to Lopez’s notorious speed and power.
