Sunny Edwards Plans to Give Andres Campos All The Smoke He Asked For
Sunny “Showtime” Edwards (19-0, 4 KO) returns to the ring on June 10 to make the fourth defense of the IBF world flyweight title against Chilean Andres Campos (15-0, 4 KOs) at Wembley Arena in London, England. The defending champion is looking to win and do so in dominating fashion.
The upcoming fight against Campos will be Edwards’s debut bout for Matchroom. Following a split with previous promoter Probellum, the 27-year-old signed with Matchroom in March 2023. The IBF champion hoped for a unification contest against WBO champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez. But that potential bout was forced to the backburner when Rodriguez suffered a broken jaw in a win over Cristian Gonzalez in April 2023.
Instead, Showtime faces Campos, currently ranked seventh by the IBF at 112. A closer inspection of Campos’s record may raise eyebrows for some observers. Despite being unbeaten, he is devoid of a signature win.
READY TO PUT ON A SHOW
That doesn’t matter to Edwards, who wants to make a statement. The defending champion signed with Matchroom because he wants to engage in high-profile, big-money fights at 112 and 115. He sees this upcoming fight as the catalyst to a battle with either Rodriguez or WBC flyweight champion Julio Cesar Martinez.
But Edwards knows he cannot afford to lose focus and drop the ball. During an interview with media outlet Boxing Social, Edwards said he’s coming to punish and believes the fight will not go the distance.
“I think I’m gonna knock out this muffin. I’ll be for real. I know it’s saying a lot coming from me, but that means it should say something.”
“He’s younger than me. I don’t think he’s operating on the sort of level as me . . . Campos, he wanted it. He’s called me out a few times for a few years and got a lot of his fans messaging me and tagging me and shit. So, it should be quite exciting.”
