Sunny Edwards Calls Out Julio Cesar Martinez
After making the first successful defense of his IBF Flyweight title, Sunny “Showtime” Edwards (17-0, 4KOs) put WBC champion Julio “El Rey” Cesar Martinez (18-1, 14KOs) on notice! The unbeaten champion thoroughly out-boxed mandatory challenger Jayson Mama (16-1, 9KOs).

In his post-fight interview, Edwards made it crystal clear that he’s only interested in big fights, and named Martinez specifically.
“Martinez, I’m coming!”
Edwards is clearly confident in his ability and by calling out Martinez for a unification showdown, he’s put the ball in the Mexican champion’s court. Martinez was last in the ring in November, fighting to a disappointing no contest against McWilliams Arroyo. He would surely welcome such a fight.
The fight is essentially a battle of styles. With Edwards, you get a fighter who can box and move around the ring. His lack of power is noteworthy considering only four of his seventeen wins have come by stoppage. With Martinez, you get a fighter who is all about action! His come-forward, punches-in-bunches style, along with power, makes him must-see TV.
A fight between these two fighters would surely provide an excellent night in the squared circle. Hopefully Edwards keeps the pressure on Martinez to accept a fight. If not, there’s always WBO champion Junto Nakatani (22-0, 17KOs) and WBA champion Artem Dalakian (20-0, 14KOs).
Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope that a fight between Edwards and Martinez comes to fruition at some point in 2022.
