Sunny Edwards Wants Bam Rodriguez Fight for his Legacy
In his latest at bat, IBF Flyweight champion Sunny “Showtime” Edwards (20-0, 4 KO’s) defended his title for the fourth time against Andres Campos. The UK native won the contest by way of unanimous decision. While conducting his post-fight interview, Edwards praised his own skillset and was quick to resume calling out Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez (18-0, 11 KO’s). The two have long been engaged in a public war of words with both saying they are hungry to face the other.
“I’m number one in the division, I’m the only one who has beaten a champion. When Bam Rodriguez announced that he was coming to flyweight, he announced that he was coming to fight me for my world title in the UK. He didn’t come to the UK, he didn’t come for my title, he went and faced some Johnny No-hope in some far away land and he beat a vacant title for a vacant champion and who cares about that. And he wants to negotiate 50/50, I’ll even negotiate 50/50 anyway, the belts don’t stand my identity. I want the big fights to create my legacy.”
IS THE WAIT OVER?!
For his part, Bam is fresh off his own unanimous decision win over Cristian Hernandez this past April. With the victory, Rodriguez plucked up the vacant WBO flyweight title and became a two-division champion in doing so. As he is hungry for his own glory, Bam was quick to respond to the most recent call out from Edwards.
Despite Edwards insisting that Bam is avoiding him, Team Rodriguez has refuted this claim. Yet, no matter how badly either man wants to face the other, both will have to wait until Rodriguez heals from the broken jaw that he suffered when winning the WBO title. By the sounds of it though, there is an excellent chance that Edwards and Rodriguez will square off in their next outing.
