Patirck Teixeira drops and decisions Carlos Adames!
In what was supposed to be a coming out party and next level arrival for the hard-hitting Dominican slugger Carlos Adames (18-1, 14KOs), it was anything but that!
Brazil’s Patrick Teixeira (31-1, 22KOs) had other plans! In a battle of power punchers, this was thought to be a forgone conclusion for Adames before the action kicked off in the ring. It wasn’t because Teixeira isn’t a quality fighter, but more because of the combination of power and skill of the Dominican along with the devastating knockout loss Teixeira suffered against Curtis Stevens in 2016.
This left many questioning the Brazilian’s ability to take a punch. A left hook from the longtime middleweight contender erased Teixeira in the second round!
The significance of Adames vs Teixeira was huge as the interim WBO junior middleweight title was on the line. Furthermore, it is expected the winner would be elevated to full champion after Jaime Munguia vacated in a move to middleweight.
THE BATTLE IN THE RING!
After an opening round that could’ve been awarded to either fighter, Adames would show why not only was he the favorite going into this fight, but why people felt he’s a legit threat to all the top guys at junior middleweight!
Letting his hands go, the Dominican would rip body shots to the slender built Brazilian as they waged battle at close range. Teixeira while dishing out shots of his own, was clearly getting outfought early on!
THE ACTION HEATS UP!
In the third round, after three consecutive right hands by Adames, Teixeira would start leaking blood out of his left eye! However, that didn’t deter his determination as he would finally get the respect of his opponent with hurtful combinations that left Adames stunned in round five!
Teixeira would keep the momentum going as he would score a fight defining knockdown in round seven which was the product of a right and left hook that sent an exhausted Adames reeling to the canvas!
The Dominican kept his composure in a pressure-filled situation and would comeback strong as he appeared to take the next few rounds. He would apply relentless pressure, pushing his opponent against the ropes and unleashing devastating combinations.
Still bleeding, Teixeira bit down on his mouth piece and went to work in the championship rounds as he used his long arms and quicker hands to pepper his opponent with combinations from the outside.
Both men gave a great effort and produced an action packed fight!
A very close battle resulted in the Brazilian being awarded a unanimous decision by the scores of 114-113 twice and 116-111. The latter card seemed a bit too wide as both men exchanged control of the bout at different stages.
A fight this close definitely warrants a rematch down the line.
This loss put the future plans of Adames on hold as his expected win was supposed to line him up for a lucrative fight in 2020. However, he must go back, regroup and gear up for another title run!
As for Teixeira, he’s put himself in a very favorable position to secure a big opportunity!
