Its Prime Time for the Lopez Versus Davis Grudge Match

It’s a known fact throughout boxing circles that reigning WBO junior welterweight champion Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (21-1, 13 KOs) and Keyshawn “The Businessman” Davis (12-0, 8 KOs) despise one another. It’s time for them to settle their differences in 2025.

IS HE GOING TOO FAR?

Davis is days away from his February 14 battle against WBO 135-pound champion Denys Berinchyk. During a press event for the boxing media, The Businessman charged Team Berinchyk with being racially insensitive after receiving a case of fruit that was filled with bananas and watermelon which he believes came from them. The camp of Berinchyk felt that Davis was pulling a publicity stunt to hype up their upcoming battle.

In response to this incident, Lopez took time out to chime in. Mocking what Davis had to say, the junior welterweight champion took to social media to post a video of himself laughing at Davis while eating a banana.

The reaction to Lopez was swift. On various message boards and chatrooms, some accused him of being a troll and his actions being far from funny.

Lopez’s video was the latest in his beef with Davis. The world-ranked lightweight contender has long had Lopez on his target list. Lopez has always said that Davis must win a world title at junior welterweight before he would entertain fighting him. However, now may be the time for him to change his stance. Davis is clearly on his brain. If not, why would he go out of his way to respond to his comments about Berinchyk?

SOONER BETTER THAN LATER

Top Rank promotes Lopez and Davis. If Davis defeats Berinchyk and becomes a world champion, it gives cred to the boxing masses, raises his profile, and gives him a bargaining chip when negotiating for future fights.

One would guess that Davis is aware of Lopez’s response, and so is Top Rank. Lopez versus Davis at 140 would be a matchup that would draw plenty of attention from hardcore and mainstream boxing fans.

The promotional powerhouse knows a potential juicy matchup. Provided Davis takes care of business on Valentine’s Day, the focus should be on these two men settling their differences in the ring before the end of this year.
