Floyd Mayweather & Stevenson Traded Their Offense For Defense
Boxing is a sport where fans want to see knockouts and high-octane fights. They love to see guys throw punches in bunches until the final bells sound. However, guys like WBC lightweight champion Shakur “Fearless” Stevenson and Hall of Fame Inductee Floyd “Money” Mayweather are defensive specialists with a low work rate.
Often, their opponents have thrown far more punches than they have landed. So, it begs the question if defensive fighters should get lower marks for victory, considering they’re playing it safe. This is often the reason why fans have called Mayweather, Stevenson, and Guillermo Rigondeaux boring.
Stevenson would let his hands go against slower fighters. His fights with Oscar Valdez and Jamel Herring, the New Jersey native had no problem letting throwing leather. Against Edwin De Los Santos, Fearless’ offense was abysmal.
Before being known as Money Mayweather, the Hall of Fame Inductee was an offensive force under the Pretty Boy moniker. In the old days, fans worshiped defense fighters, but they were at least entertaining to watch.
