Thurman Eschews “Old Man” Concerns From Jarvis With Bravado

Following a three-year stint of inactivity, former welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (30-1, 22 KO’s) will return to action. On March 12, Thurman will travel to face Australian fighter Brock Jarvis (22-1, 20 KO’s) in his own backyard. Naturally, there are many in the boxing world distressed over whether Thurman will show up on fight night. When last contracted for combat with Tim Tszyu, One Time pulled out after suffering a bicep injury.

Prior to his duel with Mario Barrios, it had almost been three full years since One Time laced up his gloves. Thurman also pulled out of a match with Shawn Porter as well as contended with various surgeries and out-of-competition injuries. Given the 36-year-old’s apparent susceptibility to injury, there is legitimate concern in the air. In a recent media promo, Jarvis voiced his similar thoughts.

“He hasn’t had a knockout in ten years. He hasn’t fought in three years. That is a long time, for his age. I know he had a scheduled fight last year, pulled out two weeks prior with an old-man injury – torn bicep. So I am a bit worried that he might not even show up. I think I’ll feel a lot better when he gets here and arrives on Australian soil.”

ONE TIME MORE?

Thurman doesn’t share this sentiment. In his opinion, not only is he the superior athletic specimen, he has the critical experience to match. Buoyed by these beliefs, Thurman is not overly concerned with Jarvis. Let One Time tell it, this is merely a brief pitstop before bigger and better fights.

“Time does not take away the ability of champions . . . You got dropped two fights ago, you got stopped! You got knocked out! I’ve never been knocked out in a fight against any of the world champions! The greatest amongst the greats! You will not handle five rounds, guaranteed! You’re just a child to me, you’re an amateur! And just like your daddy, I am going to give you a good whooping!”

Truthfully speaking, there is a bit of concern raised when one acknowledges that Jarvis was already stopped. Not only was he knocked out, he was stopped in the first round by Liam Paro while competing as a junior welterweight. Now that Jarvis is moving up to face the much heavier handed One Time, the odds of Jarvis getting hurt increase dramatically. First however, everyone has to finish camp and show up to the ring. So let’s cross our fingers and hope that all goes well.
