Thurman’s Return Could Get Postponed Due To Injury

Thurman reported to have suffered hand injury

WBC & WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman is supposed to return to the ring on May 19th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. However, according to a report that surfaced today he may have suffered a hand injury while preparing for his come back.

It’s unclear at this time if this news may cause a further delay to his return. Thurman (28-0, 22 KOs) is already dealing with coming back from elbow surgery that has sidelined him since his fight against Danny Garcia last March.

It’s not clear who is opponent is/was expected to be . Originally it was reported that he was going to face Jesse Vargas but that bout fell apart for unknown reasons. Vargas is now set to face Adrien Broner on April 21st so he is definitely out of the picture. If Thurman is returning of course.

Showtime’s Stephen Espinoza said yesterday that Thurman’s opponent for the doubleheader should be announced next week at the latest. Thurman is expected to be part of a split card the network is doing with the main event between Adonis Stevenson vs Badou Jack being held in Canada on the same night. 3KingsBoxing.com reached out to the network but the call had not been returned at the time of publishing.

*Update*

Thurman’s injury has been confirmed and his scheduled return on May 19th has been cancelled. The injury, a deep bruise in his hand, happened two weeks ago. His doctor advised him to refrain from using it for at least six weeks so he would not be able to train properly. His ring return is now expected later in the summer.
