Top Rank planning light heavyweight unification bout in late 2019!
3kingsboxing.comhas learned Top Rank is planning to stage a light heavyweight unification bout for later this year.
The major promotional company promotes and/or co-promotes three of the four light heavyweight champions. WBC champion Oleaksandr Gvozdyk, IBF champion Artur Beterbiev and WBO champion Sergey Kovalev. This news explains why Bob Arum came out adamantly against his fighters participating in a rumored WBSS light heavyweight tournament.
Now, on to which two of these three guys will fight later this year. With the news of Kovalev likely facing Anthony Yarde in August, that may automatically eliminate him from the equation. In turn, that would leave fellow unbeaten champions Gvozdyk and Beterbiev to face off in a highly intriguing unification bout.
A battle between “boxer-puncher” and “knockout artist” would have fans split on which fighter would come out on top.
This isn’t a great alternative to the likes of a WBSS tournament that could feature all four champions, however, talks of a unification at any point is a good thing.
