Top Rank Vies For A Canelo Fight By Signing Christian Mbilli

Legendary promotional company Top Rank recently signed top super middleweight contender Christian “Solide” Mbilli (26-0, 22KO). This puts them in the hunt for a possible showdown with the undisputed champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (60-2-2, 39KO) in September.

The boxing news cycle is buzzing after learning that Solide, along with EOTTM (Eye Of The Tiger Management), signed a co-promotional deal with Top Rank.

MAKING THE SMART MOVE

It was a smart move by the American promotional company, given how this could put them in the line of possibly landing a big money ticket with Canelo. Solide ranks #2 by the WBC and WBA, #3 IBF, and #4 WBO, putting him within range of a title shot.

Undoubtedly, Top Rank saw how their former fighters, Edgar Berlanga and Jaime Munguia, were pushed to the front of the line. Furthermore, the undisputed champion signed a reported one-fight deal with PBC to face Munguia on May 4.

This leaves the door open for Top Rank to walk in and drop a bag of money on the table, which could get Canelo to look in their direction. ESPN would be more than happy to host a Pay-Per-View with the undisputed champion’s name on the banner.

IS PBC UNDER PRESSURE?

The boxing public wants to see Alvarez versus two-time WBC champion David Benavidez. However, some boxing fans and pundits believe he is not in a hurry to fight the man nicknamed ‘The Mexican Monster’.

This isn’t the first time Top Rank has made a move like this, and it paid off. They signed heavyweights Joseph Parker and Kubrat Pulev, only to watch them compete in world title matches. One thing is for certain – this will turn up the heat on PBC to come up with an offer good enough to force Canelo to fight Benavidez.
