Sulaiman Segawa Overwhelms Ruben Villa For The Victory
WBC’s number-one ranked featherweight contender, Ruben “Drac” Villa (22-2, 7KO) was upset by Sulaiman “The Ruler” Segawa (17-4-1, 6KO).
In the beginning rounds, the Ugandan’s footwork, aggression, and fast punches had Villa on the back foot early. In addition, he started to attack the body, hoping to make Drac a stationary target.
Yet, in the middle rounds, Villa finally mounted some offense as the uppercuts and hooks found a home. Despite getting hit repeatedly with hard body shots, he did a better job of landing solid counter shots.
The Californian finally let those hands go and turned up the work rate as Segawa started to slow down. Realizing he may have given away too many early rounds, Villa’s corner told him to dog it out.
In the eighth round, Segawa landed a series of punishing shots that hurt his opponent. However, Villa weathered the storm and rallied late with a body shot that hurt The Ruler.
Segawa closed the show strong with sheer activity in the final rounds. The three judges scored it 99-92, 97-93, and 96-94 in favor of the visiting Segawa.
