Oleksandr Usyk Wins Tyson Fury Rematch by Unanimous Decision
In their highly anticipated rematch, unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (23-0, 14 KO’s) defeated Tyson “The Gypsy King” Fury (34-2-1, 24 KO’s) by way of unanimous decision. Right from the start, Usyk gave Fury pause with this off kilter bouncing, feinting and darting in.
Seemingly having relegated his chin to a soft target, Usyk initially primarily tormented The Gypsy King’s body with straight shots and hooks. Throughout much of the early goings, Fury had no real answers nor adjustments as he was largely flat and a hair too slow. In the fifth however, Fury appeared to shake off the fog and returned to past form.
Here he was able to sneak in a bevy of long, hammering punches to the ribs and jaw. The flash of glory did not last long as Usyk’s fancy feet took over, keeping him both typically out of danger and in range to strike. Taking a page out of Mike Tyson’s Punch Out, Usyk relentlessly popped Fury in the belly, giving him the King Hippo treatment.
His straight left bouncing off The Gypsy King’s head was another consistent weapon in the fight. Ultimately though, Usyk’s ability to dictate range, pace and exploit Fury’s slightly dulled reflexes ruled the day. Unsurprisingly, when the fight went to the scorecards, Usyk won on all three cards to the tune of 116-112.
