Director of K2 confirms Oleksandr Usyk will return in May at heavyweight
In 2018 Oleksandr Usyk had a historic year establishing himself as not only arguably the greatest Cruiserweight of all-time, he also made a serious case as a top 3 pound-for-pound fighter! At the end of the year the question became for the Ukrainian star, “will he stay at Cruiserweight or will he move up toe Heavyweight?”
That question has now been answered as Alexander Krassyuk, general director of K2 Promotions recently announced in a translated social media post.
Most of all, the next fight for Usyk will take place in the super [heavyweight] division in the United States after Easter on either May 18 or 25.
Another exciting aspect of this news is he will be making his heavyweight debut in the United States. With this move, look for Usyk’s name to quickly appear in the heavyweight rankings of the world sanctioning bodies.
Since he holds the WBO title at cruiserweight, he will be eligible to become the WBO #1 contender at heavyweight. Should Usyk acquire that ranking, we could see an Anthony Joshua bout later this year? Eddie Hearn recently cautioned Dillian Whyte about taking the offer to face Joshua in April. He cited Usyk could take his spot as the #1 contender.
A warning to Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder and all the other prominent heavyweight’s out there…Oleksander Usyk is coming!
