Josue Vargas Wins UD Over Nicolas Demario After Getting Off The Mat Twice!
After being completely destroyed in one round by junior welterweight contender Jose Zepeda, 140-pound hopeful Josue “The Prodigy” Vargas (20-2, 9KOs) began his comeback. The humbling experience came on top of a heated lead-up to their fight. Most people, going into the fight, felt Vargas was being moved entirely too fast. However, along with his handlers and team, he felt differently.
The 23-year old southpaw went into this fight as the favorite as he faced Argentina’s Nicolas Pablo Demario (15-6-3, 9KOs) in an eight-round affair. His opponent came into the fight having lost and fighting to a draw in his last two fights. Vargas fought this fight using his right jab to set up his straight left hand. He would box effectively from the outside for a lot of the fight while throwing three-punch combinations to the head and body of Demario.
In round three, Vargas would suffer the first of two knockdowns in the fight. The second knockdown, which occurred in round five, was a product of a left jab from Demario. Ironically, in the same round, a frustrated Demario would take a page out of the great Mike Tyson’s book and bite Vargas on his right arm. Instead of being disqualified as he should’ve been, he was simply deducted one point for the heinous infraction.
At the end of a hard-fought eight rounds, Vargas would be announced as the winner via a unanimous decision. The scores were 76-73 and 76-74 (x2).
While he got the win, he struggled in the process. It’ll be interesting to see how his handlers move him moving forward. It’s clear he has skills, although his ability to take a punch is a serious issue. With time, we shall see what’s to come of The Prodigy.
