Jessie Vargas Looking for New Success at Super Welterweight
During his last tour of in-ring duty, Jessie “The Pride of Las Vegas” Vargas (29-3-2, 11 KO’s) suffered his third professional loss. The defeat came at the hands of Mikey Garcia by way of unanimous. While Vargas certainly has not enjoyed this loss, or the other two, he can at least take solace in the fact that he has only lost to premium competition. His prior two losses were secured by Timothy Bradley and boxing living legend Manny Pacquiao.
Nevertheless, two-divisional champion Vargas will aim to change his luck in his next outing in a whole new division. In his next assignment, on April 30, Vargas will face the challenge of Liam “Beefy” Smith (30-3-1, 17 KO’s). The match will require the Pride of Las Vegas to matriculate up to super welterweight to dance with the former world champion.
BACK TO THE BRICKS!
Despite only having three defeats on his professional ledger, the upcoming match on April 30 does hold dire implications for Vargas if he doesn’t prevail. Clearly, it appears that he cannot truly hold his own with the elite at welterweight. So, the thinking within Team Vargas has to hold that Vargas will be stronger and therefore more effective at the new weight. If this does not turn out to be the case though, then Vargas will find himself in one unsavory position!
According to Liam Smith, he believes that the size disparity will be too great for Vargas to overcome. In all honesty this could very well turn out to be the truth! Given this backdrop, and everything that’s on the line, Vargas has an extremely tough and meaningful assignment in front of him. Thankfully 3Kings Boxing will be here to report on the play-by-play results!
