Vasyl Lomachenko Decides to Resume his Career Sooner than Later!

Is the return of “Loma” imminent? According to ESPN, Top Rank president Todd DuBoef has informed the network that three-division world champion Vasyl “Loma” Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KOs) is looking to fight as early as October.

Lomachenko has been out of action since a unanimous decision win over one-time IBF 135-pound champ Richard Commey in December 2021. When Russia invaded Lomachenko’s country of Ukraine in February 2022, the fighter formerly ranked on the 3Kings Boxing Top Ten fighter rankings put his boxing career on hold. He backed out of a fight with then unified lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr, deciding to join the territorial defense battalion to fight alongside his countrymen.

POSSIBLE OPPONENTS

With Lomachenko’s decision to carry on with his career, the question becomes: who will be his comeback opponent? Newly-crowned unified lightweight champ Devin Haney will more than likely fight a rematch with the man he beat for the titles, Kambosos. So they are off the table for the time being. Another option could be a showdown with current WBA Regular champ Gervonta Davis. However, Team Davis has never shown a serious interest in facing Lomachenko. Besides, why would Mayweather Promotions risk their cash cow against Lomachenko, despite his layoff and what he’s been dealing with?

Don’t be surprised if “Loma” faces someone ranked in the top 10 in one of the world sanctioning organizations. The 34-year-old will not want to waste time and is looking to fight for a world title sooner rather than later. Potential opponents could be former junior lightweight world title challenger Isaac Cruz, world-ranked contender Michel Rivera, or former IBF junior light champ Joseph Diaz who now fights at 135.

DuBoef didn’t disclose who Lomachenko would fight or details on location. But Lomachenko deciding to resume his career is great news for boxing fans. Stay tuned to 3Kings Boxing for further updates on this developing story.
