Judges see Vences/De Leon as a draw
The opening bout of the Top Rank on ESPN card tonight at the StubHub Center, undefeated prospects Andy Vences and Erick De Leon met in a ten round super featherweight bout.
Vences was able to come out and control the distance by establishing his jab from the beginning of round one. Rounds two through five was basically a carbon copy of each other as Vences worked behind his jab followed by a solid two.
The sixth round started just like the previous five rounds in that Vences was utilizing good movement and pumping his jab. As the round got down to under a minute left De Leon was able to effectively land a combination.
Rounds seven, eight and nine were De Leon’ s best rounds of the fight till that point by far and Vences still controlled the distance pretty much throughout those six minutes. De Leon saw his best punches land as he come forward with wide shots.
In the final round De Leon continued to come forward as Vences used his movement effectively and landed a couple of solid right hand counters. As the final bell rang both fighter’s were swinging.
The fight ended in a majority draw as the judges scorecards read 95-95 x2 and 96-94 De Leon. Vences record went to 20-0-1 and De Leon 17-0-1. Most felt Vences did enough to pick up the victory but the judges saw it different.
